Future of the Investment from the Private Sector

Session background and objectives

Utilization of private funding to cover the limited public financial support such as ODAs is indispensable for dissemination of climate change mitigation technologies, but has been a significant challenge towards achieving sustainable development. In this session, experiences gained from investing in private climate change mitigation projects, co-financing of public and private financing entities, receiving finance from private financing entities, etc. will be shared. Topics such as new approaches of private financing, challenges facing utilization of private financing as well as ways to address such challenges role of various stakeholders and expected policies for facilitating utilization of private finance will be discussed.

Abstract:

Scaling up Energy Efficiency in India through Innovative Business Models

The presentation shall share the experience gained in India in scaling up energy efficiency via a simple yet effective methodology of adopting standardised technology, piloting to demonstrate energy efficiency gains and aggregation of demand yielding reduced prices passed on to consumer.
Experience gained through the market transformation effected in the lighting sectors shall be shared. Information shall also be shared on up-coming initiatives of the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), India, which may be of interest for collaboration on technology, financing and/ or other opportunities.

Head (Acting) of the Private Sector Facility, Green Climate Fund

Abstract:

The GCF aims to leverage private sector investment through its Private Sector Facility (PSF). The PSF’s is mandated to engage private sector investors, developers, entrepreneurs, businesses, and small and medium sized enterprises in climate projects in developing countries. It aims to mobilise private sector investment at scale from local, regional, and international commercial banks, businesses, and institutional investors (e.g. pension funds, private equity funds, and insurance companies), through using an innovative of a range of financial instruments, including debt, equity, and guarantees.

Abstract:

ADB’s private sector financing: current operations and future perspectives

ADB's Private Sector Operations Department (PSOD) catalyzes, structures, and finances investments across climate and a wide range of industry sectors throughout developing Asia. PSOD has a history of financing clean energy transactions, and is increasingly supporting energy efficiency, water and climate adaptation projects. The emphasis is on commercially viable transactions that generate financial returns while also delivering on ADB's organization-wide mission to promote environmentally sustainable and inclusive economic growth. This presentation will provide an overview of ADB’s non sovereign financing products and services, their development impacts, and a detailed examination of third party funds for climate-related projects. The presentation will then outline future outlooks on climate financing in Asia and the Pacific including current market challenges and opportunities and initiatives to further promote environmental sustainability.
