California’s Energy Storage Initiative (1.3 GW requirement) addresses a larger strategy of climate mitigation by focusing on reduction of peak demand, integration of renewables, and electric power grid optimization.

Career history:

Petlin joined the CPUC Energy Division in 2011. In his current role he leads the Grid Planning and Reliability section responsible for several Commission policy rulemaking proceedings including: Energy Storage, Distributed Resource Plans, Interconnection of Distributed Energy Resources, and Reliability Reporting. Previously Petlin worked in the Retail Rate Design and Customer Generation Sections at CPUC where he led rate setting and policy proceedings in: residential rate reform, time-variant pricing, net energy metering, and green tariff shared renewables.

Prior to joining the CPUC, Gabe accumulated 13 years of experience leading regulatory policy, business development and government affairs for renewable energy organizations that include: 3Degrees, Center for Resource Solutions, Resolve, and the National Wind Coordinating Collaborative.

Gabe earned dual masters at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (MALD) and Tufts University, Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning (MA). He holds a BS in Natural Resources from the University of California at Berkeley.

Career history:

Since 2010 Dr. Eckerle has been managing director of StoREgio, a non profit association. StoREgio brings together partners from across the value chain to work on system solutions, applications and business models for energy storage systems. Projects primarily address issues such as profitable business cases, connectivity as well as system safety and security. The regulatory framework and public acceptance are other topics taken into account.
Before his time with StoREgio Dr. Eckerle held several management functions within the BASF group. He also worked for McKinsey and Sumitomo Chemicals in Japan. Dr. Eckerle has studied chemistry and received his PhD in 1992.

Energy Storage Technology Roadmap

Career history:

Cecilia Tam joined APERC as Deputy Vice President in March 2015 and is responsible for managing the research programme at APERC. She is currently leading the development of the 6th edition of the APEC Energy Demand and Supply Outlook. Prior to joining APERC, Cecilia was Head of the Energy Demand Technology Unit at the International Energy Agency, where she also leads the IEA’s Energy Technology Roadmaps Programme. Having joined the IEA in 2006 her work has covered technology roadmaps, finance, deployment and innovation, industry and energy efficiency. She has authored numerous IEA publications including Energy Technology Perspectives, Energy Technology Transitions for Industry, Transition to Sustainable Buildings, and a number of Technology Roadmaps including the Energy Storage Technology Roadmap. Cecilia was also a Senior Equity Research Analyst with Dresdner Kleinwort Benson where she covered Latin American electricity companies, working on various privatisations and equity offerings.

Role of batteries in energy systems

Career history:

• Zempachi Ogumi was Professor of Electrochemistry, Department of Energy of Hydrocarbon Chemistry at Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University. He received his BChE degree from Department of Industrial Chemistry, Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University in 1968, and he has MS and PhD degrees in Electrochemistry from Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University. Upon completion of his PhD degree in 1975, he worked at Fritz-Haber Institute of Max-Planck Foundation, Germany as a Post Doc for 1 year. He joined Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University as a Research Associate in 1976 and was promoted to Associate in 1984 and then to Professor in 1992. After he retired from Faculty of Engineering in 2009, he has been working as an Adjunct Professor of Office of Society-Academia Collaboration for Innovation in the same University and leading a national project on batteries, R&D Initiative for Scientific Innovation of New Generation Battery.
• Prof. Ogumi has been working on lithium ion batteries and fuel cells, in particular, focusing on interfacial phenomena. He has credit to over 200 peer-reviewed papers and several edited and co-edited books about new technology for advance rechargeable batteries and electrochemistry. He has been an editor of Journal of Power Sources published by Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. since 1999.
• He was the vice Chair of Battery Division of ECS 2007-2009. He was the President of the Electrochemical Society of Japan 2007-2008, and was the President of Solid State Ionics Society of Japan 2004-2006. He was the President of IBA 2010 - 2012.
