Career history:

• Edwin Basson received his PhD in economics from Pretoria University. He taught economics at the same university from 1984 to 1990. After a few years in the banking industry, he joined the steel industry in 1994 as Chief Economist at Iscor Ltd. In 1996 he became Business Units Manager for coated steel products and flat steel products. He later headed Strategic Initiatives at the company.
• Edwin joined Mittal Steel (now ArcelorMittal) in 2004 as a General Manager responsible for Marketing Strategy. He then headed Commercial Research and Market Segmentation. From 2006 until he joined worldsteel, he was Vice President, Commercial Co-ordination, Marketing and Trade Policy at ArcelorMittal.
  Edwin joined World Steel Association in August 2011 as Director General.

A graduate Engineer in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Kanpur. Started his career as Executive at Usha Martin Steel Limited a pioneer company in steel wires & ropes in India. Thereafter worked as Junior Manager in SAIL and later as Assistant Director in Bureau of India Standards. Joined Ministry of Steel Government of India as Assistant Industrial Adviser and promoted upto the level of Industrial Adviser. Worked in Ministry of Steel for 35 years in various capacities. Now engaged by Ministry of Steel, Government of India, as its Technical Consultant.

Energy conservation and CO2 mitigation in Japanese steel industry

Career history:

• Dr. Tomono joined Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. In 1971 after conferred M.S. in Engineering, Department of Metal Science, Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University. He earned Ph. D. in Engineering, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in 1979. His initial focus was based on the continuous casting process in steelmaking. His early research work significantly enhanced the detailed scientific understanding of the process. As a technical advisor, he visited steelworks around the globe to facilitate steelmaking process development.
• Dr. Tomono became the General Manager of Kashima Steelworks in 2001. He was appointed to the president in 2005 and since then contributed to enhance the corporate value of the company. He led the merger with Nippon Steel Corporation and establishment of a new company, Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal Corporation and was appointed to the president and COO in 2012. From 2008 to 2010 Dr. Tomono served as the president of the Iron and Steel Institute of Japan. He was the chairman of the Japan Iron and Steel Federation from 2012 to 2014. He has been a vice chairman of Japan Business Federation (Keidanren) since 2013.

Career history:

Keigo Akimoto was born in 1970. He received Ph.D. degree from Yokohama National University in 1999. He joined Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE) to work with the Systems Analysis Group in 1999, was a senior researcher in 2003 and the Leader of the Systems Analysis Group and an associate chief researcher at RITE in 2007. Currently he is the Leader of the Group and a chief researcher at RITE. He was a guest researcher at IIASA in 2006. He was a guest professor, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the University of Tokyo between April 2010 and March 2015, and is currently a part-time lecturer. He was a Lead Author for the Fifth Assessment Report of IPCC WG3. He is an associate member at the Science Council of Japan, and a member for several advisory bodies on energy and environmental policy for Japanese government including Strategic policy committee, Advisory committee for natural resources and energy; Global environment subcommittee, Industrial structure council; and Climate change impact assessment subcommittee, Central environment council.

Career history:

Vaclav Smil does interdisciplinary research in the fields of energy, environmental and population change, food production and nutrition, technical innovation, risk assessment, and public policy.
He has published 37 books and more than 400 papers on these topics. He is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Manitoba, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (Science Academy), and the Member of the Order of Canada; he was listed by Foreign Policy among the top 100 global thinkers and in 2015 he received OPEC Award for Research.
He has worked as a consultant for many US, EU and international institutions, has been an invited speaker in about 400 conferences and workshops in the USA, Canada, Europe, Asia and Africa, and has lectured at many universities in North America, Europe and East Asia.
